Family Night Ideas

Friday night is our night for family, not that the other nights aren't special, but by the end of the week after my husband's and my work and after the kids' long week at school, friends' houses, or even work; we just melt down and spend this night together in sort of a special way. Here are four family night ideas that will not cost you too much and will bring memories for you and your family to last a lifetime.

The first of family night ideas is we order pizza and watch a good "family" movie. Sometimes even, I'll make a special dinner like chicken quesadillas or tacos that we all love. But whatever it is, I try to keep it simple, so cooking and clean-up are easy. Our family loves to snuggle up on the couch, especially in the wintertime when snow is falling and so are the temperatures. We have satellite TV, so we have a few choices of movies to rent; however, it can be a challenge to rent a movie that doesn't have language, sex, or too much violence in it. Therefore, we have a collection of DVDs or VHS tapes underneath in the cabinet to choose from.

The second of family night ideas is in the summertime, we go out and play miniature golf and maybe ride the go-carts while we're there. This, I think, is one of our favorites. It gets us out into some fresh air and we have a little exercise as well. Furthermore, we all have a little competitiveness in us and we like to challenge each other in the game and have a few laughs at the same time. It doesn't always turn out the best for Mom, though, because I'm not a good player. Anyway, we make the best fun of it and maybe have ice cream afterwards too.

The third of family night ideas is going out to eat at one of our favorite restaurants. Now, this can be difficult sometimes, because we might not agree on which one to go to, so we either play "rock, paper, scissors" or we flip a coin to make it fair. However, we all win in this deal. Our family doesn't eat out much, so going to dinner somewhere else than home is a treat for all of us. It also gives us a chance to catch up on things that happened during the week that we might have missed in conversation, especially when our oldest son is working part-time now and might not always be home for dinner.

And last of family night ideas is staying home and having game night. We'll play Monopoly, Phase 10, Uno, or whatever happens to be available for hours. This really brings out the competitiveness in our family, although we do have bunches of fun with it. I'll supply a few favorite snacks of the household like popcorn, potato chips and dip, or pizza and we'll just eat and eat and eat and play. Sometimes, we may even invite another family to join us, and then the laughter really fills the house.

Whatever family night ideas that may bring your family together, I think the main thing to remember is that you just spend it together. The memories you'll make will last a lifetime, and when your children are older, they will continue this tradition on with their families. Just being together in this busy world of ours and slowing down a little bit makes life so much grander and means a whole lot more than spending a lot of money to have fun.
